What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an effective form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system. Also it is one of the oldest healing modalities, which has been continuously practiced for more than 3,000 years. Acupuncture is an ancient medical procedure that involves the gentle insertion of fine, sterile needles into specific points in the body. It is a safe and effective way to prevent and treat a wide variety of medical problems.

How does it work? / Does it really work?

The fine needles at the specific acupuncture points activate the body’s Qi and promote natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity and physical and emotional health. It also can improve overall function of well-being.

What is Qi?

There is no term that can define Qi perfectly but it is kind of Life (Vital) Energy. It flows throughout the body and helps to make our body alive and protect it from illness, pain and disease. A person’s health is influenced by the quality, quantity and balance of Qi.

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture is not a painful form of medicine. The sensation caused by an acupuncture needle varies. Some people feel a little pain as the needles are inserted and other people feel no pain at all. The needles are not much thicker than a human hair and are much smaller than hospital needles. In fact, most patients find acupuncture to be very relaxing and many fall asleep during treatment.

How long does it take?

The first treatment usually takes one and a half hours including interview. Follow up treatments run approximately one to one and a half hour.

Will my insurance cover acupuncture?

Insurance coverage varies from company to company and plan to plan. Many Massachusetts companies reimburse acupuncture treatment expenses via worker’s compensation, flexible spending account, or other forms of benefits. Please contact your insurance provider or employer and ask them what kind of care is covered. In most cases a claim can be submitted directly to your insurance company.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture is very safe. It is all-natural, drug-free therapy, yielding almost no side effects. Also acupuncture needles are sterile, used once and then discarded.

How many treatments will I need?

It varies from person to person and individual’s conditions. Some people experience immediate relief; others may take weeks to months to achieve results. However, most people see some degree of relief or improvement in their condition within 2-5 visits.

What can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture is used to treat wide variety of disorders such as allergies, common cold, insomnia, emotional problems, pain, gynecological disorders, infertility, headache and much more. Acupuncture is recognized by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to be effective in the treatment of a wide range of medical problem.
